Education
At 18, if you’ve stayed on at school, you may want to consider continuing with your education.
Higher Education refers to education at Level 4 and above. This may involve studying for a Bachelor’s degree at university or college, for example, or something like a Foundation Degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma/Certificate. These are some of the options available. Fees will apply. You usually make applications via your school, through an organisation called UCAS, although a very small number of courses accept applications direct.
Further Education is education up to Level 3, and if by 18 you have achieved at Level 2 (GCSEs or BTECs) you can carry on to Level 3 at a college. FE is usually free to students who are under 19. If older, you may have to pay but some financial help may be available. Applications are usually made direct to a college.
You may be also considering a FE course if you want to continue studying art. This is known as the Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design or similar, commonly termed the Art Foundation. It allows you to broaden your experience in studying art and to decide what you want to specialise in. Free to students under 19.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification for students who want to go on to higher education but don't have the right entry requirements.
Access to HE courses are delivered by colleges in England and Wales, and are available in a range of different subjects, such as humanities, health and social care and sciences. To find out more contact your local FE college and follow this link
